There's been talk lately about repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell. THANK GOD. If there was a more ridiculous policy out there it would probably sound like this, "All soldiers must wear rose colored glasses during their service so that everyone may be a reflection of who that soldier wishes that person to be" or something like that. Don't Ask, Don't Tell does not mean that there aren't gays in the military, it just means there's no disclosure.
Our military is suppose to represent our country, and guess what, our country has gays. It also has Muslims, women, Christians, and people that like mayo! These are groups that piss a lot of people off (yeah- I'm not a fan was white condiments- sue me) but we don't make women stuff socks in their underwear or make the religious not pray or force people to put mustard on their sandwiches. We respect them. And our military defends gay, feminists, religious, and condiment rights- no matter WHAT certain political parties would have you believe. We should respect all in the military, and let them choose what identity to disclose. And let's be real- Big Al Gay is not going to be enlisting, so these fears about gays "flaming" the army/military up is just so unfounded! And don't tell me that in the hot deserts of the Middle East the military couldn't have fun. I've seen those Ke$ha and Lady Gaga videos. Don't Ask, Don't Tell my ass.....
(NOTE: Having been a Media Law TA- I would not like to imply that these soldiers are gay. But if the army is ready to parody Lady Gaga and Ke$ha, I think they can accept with open arms those that actually like to dance hard to Lady Gaga and Ke$ha).
Yes, there will be times of transition. However, we're always in a time of transition. My guess is that most gays won't even come out, but to give them the right to choose is what is important. I don't understand why we fight this "War Against Terror" and fight for freedom and democracy and not even apply it to the individuals RISKING THEIR LIVES for these American ideals. To those soldiers so scared of whatever out-gays in the military would bring, is it any scarier than this war we're in right now? If it is, I don't know if I want you in the military. Dying is scary, that's why life is so great. Dying is war is scary, that's why our service men, women and transgendered are heros. If someone fighting for the same cause, acting in the same heroic way is scarier than leaving your family and friends- then you are NOT A HERO. There, I said it. You are a coward and do not deserve to represent me on a international forum.
Obama... repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
